The Piano Band that.... Rocks

Coldplay's new album "Viva La Vida, or Death & All His Friends" (sorry, not "Viva La Death and All His Friends", as I wrote earlier) is out June 12th. It's one of the worst album names I've ever heard. I think either cringed or was in disbelief when I first heard the name. I thought, "there's no way, that's actually the album name" and now a couple weeks later, Coldplay has a preview of the cover art and a free download of the new single "Violet Hill" on their official website.

I find that the new song has Coldplay-esque ambience but rocks a bit harder than any of their previous offerings. I mean that, while the melodic piano parts are there, there are also bits of jagged electric guitar and drum bits that pierce through the softer noise. It's signature Coldplay, but toughened up alittle bit.

Black sunglasses and leather jackets? You know it.

The Spanish phrase — which means “long live life” — is the title of a painting by the late Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

Chris Martin's response to qualms about the album title:

“Frida went through a lot of shit then she started a big painting in her house that said Viva La Vida. I just loved the boldness of it.

"Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect.

"I’ve been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying, ‘That’s a terrible name’, but then saying, ‘Well, fuck you, that’s what it’s called and I’ll be proved to be right eventually’.

"So when Viva La Vida came along I was kind of annoyed because I’m going to have to convince everybody of this — but it just felt right.

“Whether or not it’s good, we started to use more colours.

“It’s impossible to please everybody and it took us a while to learn that. It’s just the freedom to say, ‘Everyone might not like this. We’re into it at the moment, so let’s just get it done’.”
