There was a time when I was obsessed with visiting Glasgow. I'm not sure why. There's just something so appealing about a place that once dotted with castles, becoming a dangerous working town during the industrial revolution and became a hub of art at the turn of the nineteen century, co-pioneering the Art Nouveau movement. It's now got a happenin' music scene and it seems like a bustling artsy city that flies under the global radar.
The Cinematics are from Glasgow. They've got a UK new wave/dance rock kind of sound that's so in nowadays, but there's a kind of echo-ey sentimentalism in the sound that sets it apart and makes me think of all the reasons I wanted to see those old buildings and romantic gray skies in the first place.
The songs themselves don't necessarily refer to a specific place, but it does evoke, what I imagine, what it's like to be there.
